So my mother in law and I just booked a vacation to New York City for my wife’s 30th birthday in january. We are staying at a hotel in Queens that’s close to LaGuardia but I was wondering how easy is it for tourists to use the subway system? The hotel is two blocks away from the NQ? Train and we would be going to the USS INTREPID and Times Square and maybe Broadway and I don’t want to pay a butt ton of cab fares.
Picture of the USS Intrepid and the Concorde for your time

Get the unlimited subway pass and study a map of the subway system a bit. Me and a few friends rode the subways all over when we were on a trip out there. There is one annoying thing though- there isn’t really a station very close to Intrepid.

The N and the Q will leave you a short walk from there. You get off at 42 street and just walk west about 10-15 mins I suggest walking because you will see Times Square and all its offerings.

Being close to the Q is a god send for you. Thatll take you right to Times square and Herald Square which will help you get anywhere else

The route maps and signage are pretty easy to understand, but if you’re not used to crowds it can be intimidating.

That’s ok we don’t really mind walking or cold seeing as we are both chicagoans born and raised. Off the top of your head do you know how much an unlimited pass would cost for a weekend?

It’s not too bad, I’d get a subway map and just be aware of which trains are local/express. Also, just get a normal metrocard; I always see tourists getting confused because they mistakenly buy the one-trip cards. The N/Q goes straight to Times Square though so you should be fine.

We are both chicagoans so crowds shouldn’t be an issue haha

Not that difficult, the N and Q trains will get you down to Centeral park and you can make your way to the touristy places from there. Google maps has directions via mass transit so you can just look it up.

Is the metrocard reloadable/be used by multiple people by passing it back over the turnstile or do they frown upon that?

Just don’t touch or sit on anything in the stations. They are exactly as gross as in the movies.

I want to say I paid $5 for the day back in 2012/2013. I don’t really remember though. It was comperable to Chicago’s all day pass though.

I think a week (minimum amount of time) was 30 dollars. We got our money’s worth in about two days, though, riding all over the place. Really, it depends on whether you guys will be travelling around enough to make it worth it.

Ok cool that’s helpful

I feel like we will. I know the intrepid and the freedom tower/911 museum are on the list of places she wants to go and I want to take her ice skating at 30 Rock and other touristy things

I’d for sure recommend you guys go to Washington Square Park and grab something to eat while you’re there at Mamouns Falafel (It’s about a block away). It’s fantastic.

Yeah just buy one and hand it to the person behind you

Is reloadable, not sure if you can double dip a week pass

How easy is it? Super easy! Get the Transit app if you have an Android or iPhone it is one of the best apps to use to get a run down of nearby trains, directions and times the trains are running. It works for buses and ferries too.

Thank god lol. That’s how it works whenever we use the El too

You’re bringing your mother-in-law with you? Good luck with that.
Subway (and Uber when necessary) are your best bets. By January they should be done with all the holiday surge pricing.

Haha no. Mother in law is just helping pay for it. It’ll just be the wife and I. The in laws are going to sox fest that weekend downtown so my parents will be watching the baby

Okay wait some people are NOT giving you full information. First off, I suggest getting an unlimited metrocard. Unlimited metrocards only come in two flavors: 7 day unlimited and monthly, you’ll obviously want the 7 day unlimited for $31.00. Reason being each fare is 2.75 and it adds up quickly if you are just putting money on a card.
Second thing, unlimited metrocards cannot be swiped more than once in a 15 minute period. So yes you will need to buy more than 1 unlimited card. If you choose to put money on a card instead, that can be swiped as many times as you want until the money runs out.
If you have any more questions please feel free to ask me, I live here I don’t just visit. Also you won’t need a subway map if you have a smartphone.

Hmm ok so if I have this straight, if I were to go the unlimited route I’d need two of them but if I bought a reloadable card I would only need one and just swipe it twice? And would I be able to reload the card from the transit app or would I have to use a pay station?
![]() 11/12/2015 at 13:25 |

You have to reload the card from either the metrocard vending machine or the MTA teller window, not every station has a teller window. My opinion is get the unlimited because think of it like this: you’ll be paying 5.50 per person per ride because you are taking the subway from point A to point B and then back from point B to point A. That’s $11 for the two of you each time you re-enter a station after visiting a place. $22 total which is 1/3 the price of 2 unlimited cards in which you won’t have to worry about reloading the thing.

Enjoy. It’s $31 for an unlimited 7-day. Keep in mind when you are done, you can sell it to someone else to use for the next few days. It’s worth asking around.

Just pay attention to which trains are local and which are express and you will be fine. Oh and please don’t be one of those tourists with their head in the sky in Times Square who gets in everyone’s way. We get it, there are lots of Shiny lights. I only say this because my company made the horrendous decision of locating our North American headquarters in Times Square.

NYC subway is pretty good. If you’re using it on the weekends, just check to make sure the lines haven’t been rerouted. I once got on a train from Queens to Brooklyn which had been changed to a completely different part of Brooklyn because of construction or something, only realized it once I got there.

When I was in NYC, I found the public transit system to be really easy to use. When I was there (twice previously), I stayed in Manhattan (Hell’s Kitchen). With all the traffic, it’s best to get around either on foot or by subway.
